Entrance to Thien Hau Temple in Cholon (Chinatown)
Constructed in the early 19th century, this is one of the largest in the city and is dedicated to the worship of Buddha and the Goddess Thien Hau (goddess of the sea and protector of sailors). In the post-1975 era, many would-be refugees prayed here for safe voyage before casting themselves adrift on the South China Sea. Those who survived sent offerings to the merciful goddess and donations to the temple.
