Xitang is an ancient town in the north of Jiashan County, Zhejiang province. It is level, densely distributed with rivers and has a very quiet environment. 9 rivers converge in this town, dividing it into 8 sections, but many bridges link this water town together (anciently called as “nine dragon old pearl” and "wind from 8 sides”). In the town, there are many well-preserved architectural houses constructed during the Ming and Qing dynasties, which boast a high artistry and research value. It is believed that Xitang existed during the Spring and Autumn era. In the early Tang dynasty, Xitang was already a large village located besides the river. In Song dynasty, the village became a trading center, and in Yuan dynasty, Xitang became a larger trading center attracting merchants from many places. In Ming and Qing dynasties, Xitang has been an important town for handicraft industry and commerce.
